Pistorius acquitted of murder charge

On September 11, double amputee Olympian runner Oscar Pistorius was acquitted of murder charges for fatally shooting his fiancé, model Reeva Steenkamp, the Los Angeles Times reported on September 11.

Reports said Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to hand down a verdict of “negligent killing” against Pistorius in the next hearing. Judge Masipa weighed on Pistorius’ defense that he used too much force and reacted too quickly when he fired his gun four times through a bathroom door on February 14, 2013, killing Steenkamp. Pistorius’ defense said he mistook Reeva as an intruder was accepted by Masipa. The verdict was controversial in the South African and legal communities, who wondered whether Masipa gave the wrong verdict in the case.
