‘Gray Divorce’ on the Rise
According to a recent study titled Gray Divorce: A Growing Risk Regardless of Class or Education, which was done by the Council of Contemporary Families at the University of Texas at Austin, baby boomers, or people who were born after World War II between the years 1946 and 1964, are getting divorced more frequently. This practice of divorcing in later years has been labeled “gray divorce” by researchers.
Studies have shown that these baby boomers are bucking traditional trends by ending their marriages after many years together. Previously, it was believed that the majority of divorces occurred while the couples were relatively young, leaving time for remarriage. It seems that more and more older couples are finding that they have little in common with each other, and evidence suggests that this becomes apparent once distractions such as careers and child rearing are no longer a factor.
